Using Outlook 2000/2003 with KONSEC Konnektor Release 1.1

The proprietary KONSEC Konnektor is actively developed since March 2003. The release of KONSEC Konnektor 1.0 took till June 2005. This was mainly due to the fact that KONSEC chose to implement a complete MAPI Storage Provider. The product is under active development and maintainance with regular releases.

The current software can be downloaded from www.konsec.com. This download includes an evaluation license for 30 days.

The KONSEC developers recommend to use the most update (all available Microsoft patches shall be applied) of Microsoft Outlook before installing the Konsec Konnektor. Most tested are Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2003.

Currently English, German and French are supported languages.

The KONSEC Konnektor provides a MAPI Storage Provider for Microsoft Outlook and works really well with Kolab 2.0 and KDE Kontact.

Strengths:

  • a full MAPI Storage provider
  • really fast - no needless IMAP logins nor TLS handshakes
  • efficient usage of the Kolab format (no unnecessary tnef attachements)
  • No long synchronization delays when changing calendar entries
  • No synchronisation of individual folders but queueing of new messages for speed, reliability and bandwidth benefits
  • Instant update on the server in online mode (no sync interval)
  • Instant update when entering a folder
  • very scalable for large calendars, contact folders etc.
  • supports synchronising with MS Pocket PC devices (ActiveSync)
  • supports synchronising with Palm Pilot devices (HotSync)
  • fully supports public folders (shared folders not belonging to an explicit user)
  • nice, clean and comprehensive documentation
  • Available in English, German and French
  • Server based mass licensing scheme (no need to setup every individual client)
  • Alternatively single user licenses available (for small installations)
  • documentation currently available in English and German
  • native German and good English support by the manufacturer (phone and email)
  • 30 day trial license included in the gratis download
  • single point of support including KDE Kontact client and the Kolab Server
  • German/EU conforming invoice (important for businesses)
  • Works well with sending from Word, Acrobat or Explorer
  • easy subscription for shared folders

Weaknesses:

  • higher price compared to the Toltec Connector

Status Release 1.1

Release 1.1 was a major step for KONSEC as it removed some limitations of the 1.0 series. Especially the sending from MAPI clients like MS Office or Acrobat now works flawlessly as some HotSync and ActiveSync issues are finally solved. In addition a lot of support to assist with mass roll-outs has been added to the product.

  • installation is very easy but must follow exactly the detailed [instructions]
  • testing showed that the KONSEC Konnektor is running very stable
  • the KONSEC Konnektor fully supports the Kolab 2 XML storage format
  • interoperability with Kontact 1.1.1 from KDE 3.4.1 looks good
  • interoperability with Kolab Horde client is tested
  • access control lists and sharing of folders is fully implemented and working
  • TLS/SSL is fully supported
  • MIME Support works fine
  • has full support for Kolab 2 IMAP annotations
  • Kolab 2 freebusy support is fully implemented
  • synchronisation with my old Palm V works (tested with 10,000 events) (HotSync)
  • synchronisation with Pocket PC PDA is very fast (tested with ActiveSync 4.1 and 10.000 events)
  • tests for Sphinx S/MIME encryption plugins are missing (anyone got access to the required plugins?)
  • PGP support is tested and supported
  • support for large deployment scenarios (One customer with 40.000 users)
    • Konferenzraum
    • Kolab2 -- integrierter Groupwareserver aus freien Komponenten
    • by Jörn Seemann
    • pages 110-113
