Kolab2/Gentoo
From Kolab wiki
Origin
The Kolab2/Gentoo project was started by Gunnar Wrobel with the desire to provide the Kolab server on a fast paced Linux distribution. While Gentoo is not able to provide the same stability that the OpenPKG environment guarantees it is an ideal playground for developers. Modifying packages, extending the system and patching applications all have a reduced overhead since Gentoo is a source based distribution and there is no need to provide precompiled, binary packages. This way users and developers communicate about the same basic building blocks of a Gentoo system: ebuilds. As a result the development speed is rather fast.
Status
Currently the Kolab2/Gentoo project provides a complete working Kolab 2.1 server (albeit still marked "unstable") that features an interesting set of extensions. In addition to the standard OpenPKG features of a Kolab server it provides the newer Apache2 server, the Horde Groupware web frontend, a ticket support system and mailing lists. Most of these features are optional.
The Kolab2/Gentoo effort is now driven as an open source project by the company p@rdus. This company provides Kolab2/Gentoo servers as web installations. Customers that do not desire to get involved into the complex configuration of such a groupware server can simply rent the machines.
Effect on the OpenPKG version
A large part of the recent development work on making Horde integrate better with Kolab was completed by p@rdus on Gentoo servers. The company has now been contracted by the Kolab Konsortium to backport the Horde improvements to the OpenPKG version.
